DAY 1: Dr. Tasha Laman, From Ideas to Words: Writing Strategies for English Language Learners

                         

In this day-long workshop, we will discuss and learn the promise and possibility of creating engaging writing instruction with and for English language learners. Topics include:

  • Creating a classroom environment that supports ELL writers
  • Building a community that promotes risk-taking and values children’s life experiences
  • Creating whole-group minilessons that meet the needs of emerging and fluent ELLs
  • Scaffolding independent practice for a wide variety of ELLS
  • Scaffolding Writing conferences with tools based on ELL students’ writing and language needs
  • Facilitating and encouraging students to share their writing and reflect on their growth

DAY 2 WIDA Standards

                  

South Carolina will use the WIDA English language proficiency standards for the 2013-2014 school year.  This day will be an intense focus on rolling out these new standards and understanding their link to the CCSS.

DAY 3 Debbie Zacarian: Mastering Academic Language

                            

Ideal for Common Core initiatives, Day 3 will offer a step-by-step approach for teaching academic language, including case studies, and classroom strategies.

Workshop is from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm
